Country of Longuyon - The city hall

In October, 1863, the City Council decided to set up a new city hall on the Military exercise place, in the center of the city. The project fell to Mr Varin, architect of the city, and to Mr Gaunard, entrepreneur there.

After three years of works, in 1867, the new City hall was inaugurated. This city hall, deserving of a big city, sheltered in fact the municipal services of a small village of 2300 inhabitants, in the time.

We can think that this spending was heavy, but the City Council, with futils pretexts of faults, suspended the payment.
The result was that the entrepreneur Mr Gaunard, ruined, committed suicide down from the building.
When you will contemplate our city hall, have a small thought this poor Mr Gaunard, who did not doubtless deserve that.

The place is not any more called "military exercise place" or places "Thiébault de Bar" but simply, " place of the City hall ".

The fountain, of recent setting-up, took the place of a car park. This pedestrian place is now much more pleasant and allows the regular organization of showed: market of Christmas, holiday of the music in june, etc....
